The purpose of this course is to continue developing reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills through the use of traditional instruction as well as technology. To do this, all state-mandated objectives will be addressed: Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing Process, Critical Reading and Writing, Vocabulary, Language, Research, Multimodal Literacies, and Independent Reading and Writing.
Below are the units we will focus on during the year. Please Note: Many of these skills will be taught in a recursive manner rather than in isolation.

Usage and mechanics
The Writing Process/sentences/paragraphs/essays
AR/IR (Accelerated Reading and/or Independent Reading)

The Cordell School Board of Education has established the following letter and numerical grading scale:
A-90 to 100 B-89 to 80 C-79 to 70 D-69 to 60 F-59 or BELOW
Grades will be distributed as follows:
Homework/in-class assignments/class participation=35 percent
Tests/quizzes/major assignments/AR requirements/ IR requirements=60 percent
Homework assignments will be due at the beginning of the hour. If for some reason, you do not have your assignment ready to hand in, you will be allowed to turn one assignment in one day late for 60 per cent credit of the grade. After that, no assignments will be accepted. If you are absent on the day that a test, quiz, major project, etc. has previously been scheduled, you will be expected to make up the assignment or turn in the project the day you come back to school.
Missing Work-If you receive two zeros in a 2-week period, your parents will be notified.
Plagiarism, cheating, and stealing electronic work from the computers are serious offenses and will be handled by a telephone call to your parent/guardian along with a “follow-up” written in the Student Violation Report. A zero will be assigned for this particular item depending on the follow-up with the parent/guardian and administrator.
