Letter from Superintendent concerning COVID-19

Dear Cordell Community:

On Monday, March 16, 2020, the State Board of Education voted to close all Oklahoma schools, effective immediately, until at least April 6 in an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

This includes Cordell Public Schools. There will be no school activities and all school facilities will be closed during this time.

Oklahoma schools are not expected to be required to make-up the missed days. At this time, schools have been instructed by the State Department of Education not to provide online, home-based or distance learning for students.

Communication will be key during the next two weeks. It is our hope that accurate and up-to-date correspondence will combat fear and panic, as well as help you make well-informed decisions for your family. As a district, we will be sending correspondence to you by Facebook, Twitter and the district website. I will provide information later this week on providing meals for students during this time period.

For Cordell Schools, there is nothing more important than the safety and health of our students, staff and community. We want you to be safe, and we appreciate your flexibility and understanding. We all have a responsibility to help limit the spread of this virus, Cordell is strong, and we will get through this together.

If you have questions or need additional information, contact me at or at 580-832-1000.

Coronavirus Information

Dear Cordell Community,

I would like to provide Cordell community members with some basic information regarding the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).  The safety of our students, faculty, and staff along with the Cordell community will drive our decision-making process as we move forward dealing with this health issue. Cordell Schools is monitoring the virus and following the guidance provided by both the Oklahoma State Department of Health and the State Department of Education.

As a community, it is our responsibility to work together to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.  This is a large responsibility. We are all stakeholders in the health and well being of the community, and we must act responsibly.

As you know, this situation is receiving significant media attention. However,  there is no reason for panic. One confirmed case of COVID-19 exists in Oklahoma at the time this letter is being written. The best response to any infectious virus is prevention.  We encourage our staff, students and their families to adhere to the following preventive measures that are recommended by the Oklahoma State Department of Health:

  • Stay home when you are sick.

  •  Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Help young children do the same.

  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

  • Limit close contact, like kissing and sharing cups or utensils, with people who are sick.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. If you do not have a tissue, use your sleeve (not your hands).

Individuals returning from travel to China, South Korea, Italy, Iran, Japan or any other Level 2 or 3 country as identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) should self-quarantine for a period of 14 days before returning to school. This applies to all students, teachers, and other school or district staff.  As an added precaution, please contact me if you have traveled outside the United States during spring break. The following is my contact information:

Phone: 580-832-1000 (please leave a message)

The school will continue to monitor the spread of the virus. If the health threat to the community or school changes, additional measures will be taken. Click the link below to monitor the spread of Coronavirius in Oklahoma as well as the U.S.
